ALLEN NS - VIRTUAL SPORTS DAY, JUNE 2020.

Welcome to the first ever virtual sports day in the history of Allen NS. Usually we would be preparing for our annual sports day in school but this year we will be taking part and having FUN from our own homes. We have come up with some fun activities for you to try with your family at home. These are just suggestions, you may not have the equipment or space for some activities so don’t worry you can substitute out any equipment for something you do have (For example a pair of rolled up socks could work as a small throwing and catching ball).

We have included some videos to show you how to do the activities. Give them your best shot and let us know how you got on and if you added any other activities into your sports day. If there is an activity that is maybe a bit too challenging or a little too easy, get creative and see how you can modify it to suit you. We look forward to seeing how everyone gets on. Best of luck!!

A message from Ms. McDonagh

Ms. Flavin's Obstacle Course

An obstacle course can be made using so many different pieces of equipment. From sports equipment to garden furniture. Create your own obstacle course and give it a go. Here is Ms.Flavin’s wonderful obstacle course with some great activities and skills involved.

Ms. Lyon's Workout

Ms. Lyons has put together a wonderful workout lesson for all age groups that will most certainly get you active on sports day. Try and do each exercise for around 30 seconds each and then take 15 second breaks between each exercise. Once you have one round done take a 2-minute break and if you’re feeling up to it, try it again and again!!

Sports Day Races

Sports Days always have some fun races. Last year we had a potato and spoon race, a jigsaw relay, and a ladle relay. Pick some races for you and your family to try. Remember that it doesn't have to be about who comes 1st. You could do the race yourself three times and time yourself and see can you beat your quickest time.
Here are some examples:
  • Hurdles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-YJhTYhDJg
  • 3-legged race https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVhc2Uq0im8
  • Teddy bear race https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTw32TsS9QA
  • Egg and spoon https://youtu.be/-w1uCpTHiEQ?t=456
  • Slow bicycle race https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m89KgJcGuBc

Ms. Cusack's Balancing Book Race and Obstacle Course

The McCabe's Race Activities for the whole family!

The book balancing race, wonderfully demonstrated by Ms. Cusack, Grace and Matthew.

*Adapt the race by using less/more obstacles
* Adapt the race by changing the mode of travel and the body part to balance on e.g. running, crawling (book on your back), hopping (book balancing on one hand in the air), jumping etc.
Ms. McCabe and Mrs. McCabe have joined forces and been busy organising their own Sports Day for the younger members of their families. Try out their dress up race, potato and spoon race and sack race. They're guaranteed to be lots of fun and also to provide plenty of giggles too!

*Adapt the sack race if needs be by cutting holes in the bottom of the sacks
*Adapt the clothes race by using less/more items to put on

Balancing and Gymnastics with Mr. Martin

Mr. Martin has set you all some balancing challenges. Gymnastics is a great sport for balancing and stretching and can have so many benefits for all the others we play. Give these activities a try and see how long you can hold them for. Try these with an adult present to help you.

Mr. Melia's GAA Drill

Outdoor and Adventure with Ms. Nolan

Mr. Melia has talked the talk and walked the walk from Ellistown. Let’s show him how Ballyteague, Na Fianna and all the other GAA clubs attended by our students can rise to the challenge of this catching and hand passing drill.
Ms. Nolan has given a wonderful example of an outdoor activity that we can do as a family on sports day or any day. Getting outside in the fresh air whether it be for a walk, a cycle, flying a kite, kayaking or walking a dog is a great form of exercise.

Yoga with Ms. Sheehan

Ms. Sheehan has put together a wonderful yoga session for all ages incorporating some wonderful everyday examples into the poses. Try this after all your activities to help you wind down and relax after your sports day.

Crazy Golf with Ms. Conway

Ms. O'Reagan's Garden Games

Ms. Conway has put together some wonderful examples of how we can get creative with some everyday household items to create a crazy gold course. Do send us on some pictures of your crazy golf courses, we’d love to see them.

Ms. O’Regan has put together some wonderful examples of how we can get active in our back garden with a bowling game using items from your house or garden and a tennis ball and a wall. Make sure to show us how your bowling game goes, creativity is key here.

Ms. McDonagh's Alphabet Challenge

So parents say they know the alphabet inside out!!
Kids let’s put them to the test with this sports day alphabet challenge!
They talk the talk but can they walk the walk?
Do they know their moves?
Are they fit to pass this test?
It’s over to you put them through their paces and test them.
Give them one point for each correct move and a total score out of 26. No cheating allowed!!
With your parents’ permission share their score with your class teacher on Class Dojo and/or you can share video evidence of their serious and not so serious efforts.. I’ll take a peep too of course!!
Good luck everyone – enjoy!!
Have a great day
